Venues across the Greater Pittsburgh area book their November and December dates early. Before you sign anything, here are seven things I have learned watching hundreds of company parties from the front of the room. A few of them will save you money. All of them will save you from a room that never quite warms up.

1

Remember why you are having a party at all.

It is not just a chance to eat and drink together.

2

Keep the order of events simple.

Cocktail hour, dinner, entertainment, then presentations. In that order, almost every time.

3

Do not forget the spouses.

This is one of your only chances to make an impression on the people your employees go home to.

4

The most powerful person in the room should emcee.

It does not take much, and handing the microphone to the DJ says something out loud.

5

The only theme for any speech is gratitude.

Not improvement, and not politics. I have watched both empty a room.

6

Use the music.

It does more for the energy of a room than almost anything else you can buy.

7

Book the room and the evening in the same conversation.

Lock the venue first and the good options are gone by October.

That is the short version of each one. The guide gives you the reasoning behind all seven, plus the month by month timeline, the venue questions and the run of show template.

One more thing.

All of this comes from the front of the room, which is where I spend most of December. If you are putting your party together and want a second set of eyes on the run of show, call me. Glad to help whether or not you ever book me.

The seven above are the short version. The complete guide goes further: the month-by-month booking timeline, the questions to ask a venue before you sign, and a run-of-show template you can hand straight to your team.

One email, that is all I need.
